Annotated Bibliography: The Ban on E-cigarettes
Claim: The Government considers electronic cigarettes to be unhealthy for use. However, some people view them as a safe way of smoking, but they cause heart and lung problems, hence the reason for the government to ban them.
Brown, J., Beard, E., Kotz, D., Michie, S., & West, R. (2014). Real‐world effectiveness of e‐cigarettes when used to aid smoking cessation: a cross‐sectional population study. Addiction, 109(9), 1531-1540.
The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the use of e-cigarettes as compared to other types of narcotic drugs such as those purchased over the counter for narcotic replacement therapy. A lot of people are struggling with the idea of quitting smoking because it has negative impacts on their health. Therefore, they have sought the use of e-cigarettes to replace their craving for smoking. Little do they know that the e-cigarettes also have negative health impacts and can be addictive. However, the article also indicates that the individuals who have been using e-cigarettes find it easier to abstain as compared to those who have been using combustible nicotine products. As a result, it will be helpful in the research by showing that an individual can easily quit the use of e-cigarettes and their ban could be of great help to the smokers seeking to quit.
Chaiton, M., Schwartz, R., Cohen, J. E., Soule, E., & Eissenberg, T. (2018). Association of Ontario’s ban on menthol cigarettes with smoking behavior 1 month after implementation. JAMA internal medicine, 178(5), 710-711.
The authors of these articles hold a Ph.D. and, therefore, their study is suitable for use in the research. The articles outline the fact that menthol cigarettes where banned in Ontario as at January 2017. The authors carried out a study to determine the change in behavior of the individuals who used to smoke the menthol cigarettes and their behavior after the ban. They found out that the cigarettes were causing an addiction among the users and similar to other narcotic drugs, the tar was affecting their lungs. However, the negative health impact did not require immediate attention. Therefore, there is no evidence showing the extent of the impact after a long period of use of the cigarettes. After the ban of the cigarette, most of the individuals have quit smoking and the negative health impacts have cleared. Therefore, this is an indication that smoking is harmful to the health regardless of the type of cigarette used. In turn, it will be helpful in the research by explaining as to why the government should ban e-cigarettes.
Farsalinos, K. E., & Le Houezec, J. (2015). Regulation in the face of uncertainty: the evidence on electronic nicotine delivery systems (e-cigarettes). Risk management and healthcare policy, 8, 157.
This article is viable for because it has been published in the National Center for Biotechnology Information website. The authors point out that smoking is harmful to the human body. However, e-cigarettes have been thought to be the safest way of smoking. Their regulation remains controversial because enough research has not been carried out to proof the fact that t...
