Analysis of the Japanese History Bibliography
Book selection
Select a monograph that deals with subject matter relevant to the content of the course. Think about historical or cultural issues/themes that interest you. The professor can suggest some books that deal with such issues. Historical novels are usually not acceptable, unless they are classics. Talk with the professor if you have an alternative, creative idea.
Book approval
The professor must approve your book selection.
Writing the review
The review should be 5-7, numbered, double-spaced pages in length. Include an unnumbered title page giving the title and author of the book, the number of the course, the date, and your name. Staple the paper in the upper left corner.
Begin the review with a full bibliographical citation for the book (author, title, place of publication, publisher, date of publication, number of pages).
A good review will address these questions:
What are the author's unique qualifications for treating this subject?
What does the book say? Provide a brief summary of the contents and the major points the author makes. Is there a clear point to the book? How is the book organized?
What sources does the author use? Does the bibliography include primary sources and sources in languages other than English?
What is the author's interpretation of the subject and the period under study? Does the author show any biases?
What is the contribution of this book to the understanding of its subject field?
You can also critique the author's writing style and clarity.
The review is due on the date stated in the syllabus.
Ways to assure quality and maximum credit
Take care to write well. Use spell-check and proofread.
Don’t use up your pages just summarizing the content of the book. Include analysis and critique.
Ask a fellow class member or a student friend to read and criticize a rough draft.
Utilize the student peer review services of The Center for Excellence in Writing
Ask the professor to look over a rough draft, at least three days before the final deadline.
