Annotated Bibliography Instructions:

Prepare a 3–6 page annotated bibliography in which you identify and describe peer-reviewed publications that promote the use of your selected technology to enhance quality and safety standards in nursing. Be sure that your annotated bibliography includes all of the following elements:
TOPIC: Telehealth
Introduction to the Selected Technology Topic
What is your rationale for selecting this particular technology topic? Why are you interested in this?
What research process did you employ?
What databases did you use?
What search terms did you use?
Note: In this section of your bibliography, you may use first person since you are asked to describe your rationale for selecting the topic and the research strategies you employed. Use third person in the rest of the bibliography, however.
Annotation Elements
For each resource, include the full reference followed by the annotation.
Explain the focus of the research or review article you chose.
Provide a summary overview of the publication.
According to this source, what is the impact of this technology on patient safety and quality of care?
According to this source, what is the relevance of this technology to nursing practice and the work of the interdisciplinary health care team?
Why did you select this publication to write about out of the many possible options? In other words, make the case as to why this resource is important for health care practitioners to read.
Conclusion/Recommendation
How would you tie together the key learnings from each of the four publications you examined?
What organizational factors influence the selection of a technology in a health care setting? Consider such factors as organizational policies, resources, culture/social norms, commitment, training programs, and/or employee empowerment.

Analyze current evidence on the impact of a selected patient care technology on patient safety, quality of care, and the interdisciplinary team.
Integrate current evidence about the impact of a selected patient care technology on patient safety, quality of care, and the interdisciplinary team into a recommendation.
Competency 4: Recommend the use of a technology to enhance quality and safety standards for patients.
Describe organizational factors influencing the selection of a technology in the health care setting.
Justify the implementation and use of a selected technology in a health care setting.
Competency 5: Apply professional, scholarly communication to facilitate use of health information and patient care technologies.
Create a clear, well-organized, and professional annotated bibliography that is generally free from errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
Follow APA style and formatting guidelines for all bibliographic entries.

Annotated Bibliography on Telehealth
Telehealth serves to provide populations in remote areas access to primary and specialized health care which they lack because of disparities issues brought about by some social determinants and poverty. I am interested in this topic because of the impact it brings to society considering how technology has made it easier for patients to communicate with the caregivers in real-time. I used PubMed as my database as it provides systematic reviews about sufficient articles on the subject. This being a secondary research method, I performed a search on the database using keywords such as telemonitoring, telehealth, telemedicine, and audio-teleconferencing. I selected only relevant and recent articles published not later than five years ago.
Fathi, J.T., Modin, H.E., & Scott, J.D. (2017). Nurses advancing telehealth services in the era of healthcare reform. OJIN: The Online Journal of Issues in Nursing, 22(2), Manuscript 2, DOI: 10.3912/OJIN.Vol22No02Man02
Fathi, Modin, and Scott (2017) review the emergence of telemedicine in the united states, define the modalities of telemedicine services, and put more emphasis on issues such as cost of delivery, means, quality, and the need for the services. In the article, the authors also discuss policy considerations that might be related to telemedicine such as the contributions and roles of nurses as well as the future considerations for this novel health care model. According to the article, telehealth will impact patient safety and quality of care through synchronous telehealth, mobile health also known as eHealth, asynchronous telehealth, remote telemonitoring, and eConsults. The modalities are all relevant across different areas of nursing practice and interdisciplinary teams. I chose this article because apart from highlighting the opportunities of telehealth, it covers a section of nurses as important partners in the technology since they are at the first line in care.
Jong, M., Mendez, I., & Jong, R. (2019). Enhancing access to care in northern rural communities via telehealth. International Journal of Circumpolar Health, 78(2), 15554174, doi: 10.1080/22423982.2018.1554174
In their article, Jong, Mendez, and Jong (2019) examine the impact of enhancing access to health care in rural northern Canada through telehealth and arrive at conclusions that the technology can significantly increase access to health care services to remote areas and reduce the cost of care. Telehealth is diverse in terms of providing care in instances where the services are not locally available. Telehealth makes it easier for patients to receive quick care through the use of consultants who are at a far distance. It saves lives and cuts on costs related to healthcare systems and offers an incredible form of support to health staff and patients who are in Northern practices that are isolated. The impact of this technology on the health of people living in the northern regions of Canada is immense. Already in rural Canada, services such as tele-oncology and dietary consults are available through telehealth thus enhancing patient safety and improving care (Jong, Mendez & Jong, 2019). Ac...
