Parenting A Special Needs Child
Annotated Bibliography Beighton, C., & Wills, J. (2019). How parents describe the positive aspects of parenting their child who has intellectual disabilities: A systematic review and narrative synthesis. Journal of applied research in intellectual disabilities 32(5), 1255–1279. The authors focus on the positive descriptions given by parents raising children with intellectual disabilities. This was considered important since it can assist professionals in offering support services over time. A narrative synthesis methodology was undertaken to analyze data and identify themes among select studies. The results show that there were consistent themes that emerged relating to aspects of positivity, growth and development in relation to parental dispositions. Therefore, this study is significant in raising awareness of the need to focus on the positive aspects of parenting children with special needs instead of just the stresses. The authors note the effect of parenting stress on both the children and parents in a family unit, with a focus on those with children with Down Syndrome (DS). This study aimed to evaluate stress levels in parents, identify any clinically salient features leading to maternal stress, and assess the demographic characteristics that could lead to parental stress. The findings showed that unemployment was a major cause of parental distress among the respondents. Therefore, this research is important since it highlights the potential struggle of parents trying to combine family care with work, hence the need to offer policy interventions in such cases. Latzer, I. T., Leitner, Y., & Karnieli-Mille, O. (2021). Core experiences of parents of children with autism during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Autism, 25(4), 1047–1059. The authors analyzed the effect of the restrictions put in place by governments to combat the spread of COVID-19 on parents with autistic children. Notably, special educational centers were shut down, thus forcing such children to stay home. The authors employed a qualitative immersion/crystallization analysis from the data collected from the respondents. Further, it was noted that the parent’s ability to cope was directly correlated with their children’s success in overcoming the cha...
