How Participating in High Impact Practices Relate to Success for Students
Kilgo, C. A., Sheets, J. K. E., & Pascarella, E. T. (2015). The link between high-impact practices and student learning: Some longitudinal evidence. Higher Education, 69(4), 509-525.
Kilgo, Sheets, and Pascarella (2015) wanted to know if there is any dependence between high impact practices and the success of the students learning. This study was done in 2014 by analyzing already available data from the Wabash National Study of Liberal Arts Education. The high impact practices they concentrated on in their analysis were active and collaborative learning, undergraduate research, studying abroad, and first-year seminars, writing-intensive courses, academic learning communities, internships, and service-learning. Their findings showed that undergraduate research and active and collaborative learning positively affected intercultural effectiveness, critical thinking, as well as the need for cognition. The rest of the high-end practices tested generally showed that they positively contributed to the success of the students (Kilgo, Sheets & Pascarella, 2015).
