The authors perceive career as an integral concept of the 20th century western societies. The authors contend that while term career is usually employed as a contraction idiom for work patterns and histories, it also tends to play more important roles. This evidenced by the fact that most people in today’s highly specialized and complex social order employ the term career to accord social meaning, continuity and coherence to their existence. The article regards work as ‘the central life role’ and a key ‘pillar of career counseling’. The authors posit that work, in other words an occupational role, plays the central role of conferring social identities and attaching persons to reality. The article therefore emphasizes the central role played by careers and work roles in the lives of individuals.
While the argument that work is ‘the most salient social role’ or ‘central life role’ may hold some water, it is imperative to examine how different persons regard their work amidst other core life roles. Consequently, there is need for the modern day society to review the notion that work is the integral life role and encourage individuals to chart a life direction not just with attention to their occupational roles but to other core multiple roles as well.
