My Contribution as a Social Worker
I am social worker and I have also had the chance to work with students. I have noted that even in schools, children and young students face different forms of prejudice and discrimination. These are mainly targeted against the immigrants. However, I wish to stamp my impact by helping in eliminating such social evils. I will use my skills in achieving this.
There are various ways through which children and young people face prejudice and discrimination. Such cases are evident in our everyday activities. For instance, I have witnessed children get discriminated because of their race. I am an employee in a multicultural school and the children I deal with are Indian, White, Black and Somali. Some of the young people are immigrants and at times there is language barrier between some of the students and their parents and this may lead to miscommunication. Such stigma sometimes leads to conflicts between the students, as well as low self-esteem and self-confidence among the victims. I purpose to promote respect for all religions and enable the learners to understand that all religions are equal and drop the stereotypes that they have.
I have also noted that children and young people with disabilities are also targets of discrimination and prejudice. This is because such students are usually unable to fit in with their peers and are left out during certain events like parties and sports. This is because some parents fail to teach their children to be inclusive as well as affectionate to students who may not be as fortunate as they are. This leads to prejudice, and signals the need for children to be taught the importance of inclusion both at home and at school. I will engage parents and children to teach them the importance of respecting the rights of the chal...
