NYU ADMISSION ESSAY
“Sometimes you make choices in life, and sometimes choices make you.”
Who we are is the sum of our choices. There are easy ones, like which album to listen to next, and there are hard ones, like choosing to order the salad over the steak. Then, there are great ones—ones that change the course of your life—choosing to apply to New York University is just that. Much thought goes into choosing a college, contrary to what other people might think. It well enough takes much time and careful research before making semi-permanent decisions, however, at this point, I aim to be as certain as possible as I venture into another chapter in my life.
I am applying for an undergraduate degree (Bachelor of Science) in Economics at the NYU College of Arts and Science. The subject has always piqued my interest, and I genuinely want to learn as much as I can about it with the available resources. I find the study of economics to be efficient in a sense that it views the world through the lens of operational markets and economies, and these have real and at most times powerful effects on the different nation-states and economic blocs at present. Learning how to study them at the grassroots will have a universal application which will always remain relevant. NYU’s Economics program is one of the leading centers of excellence in the country, if not the world, thus my application. There are multiple reasons why I chose NYU to be my university of choice, but for brevity, I shall mark it down to three.
Firstly, as aforementioned, I choose excellence. NYU is one of the top universities in the United States and an established institution for higher learning that is internationally competitive while maintaining a perspective that is very American, fostering a community that engages and contributes to society through both research and inventive work, and dominance in any chosen field. It is important to take into account a university’s drive to remain globally and socially relevant, and I believe I found that in NYU. Being an institution that is constantly innovating is impressive and at the same time comforting in a sense that it welcomes you to learn from and with the university itself. There is certain ease that envelops the learning environment when you come to find out that it is indeed very interactive in that NYU boasts of faculty-student rapport to that extent.
One of the major points that pushed me to pursue NYU was the powerhouse economic research department. As I have researched, some of the members of the faculty have been lauded by the National Academy of Science, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Econometric Society, the Sloan Foundation, and the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. Moreover, yet, despite having the best of the best in their Economics department, the priority still is about the undergraduates absorbing as much as humanly possible, and personally, it is indispensable that students can speak with their professors without having to be in a constant state of terror.
