Graduate School Application Statement
I wish to apply for a Master of Computer Science in your institution. I graduated from James Madison University with a bachelor of science in Computer Science. I gained technical skills in computer programming. I superficially focused on object-oriented programming and algorithms. In addition to technical skills, I gained a wide range of nontechnical skills. These include problem-solving, leadership, and communication skills, among others. While at Madison University, I got a position as a teaching assistant for freshmen and sophomores, where I taught intermediate-level object-oriented programming and algorithms. The position allowed me to interact with students and discover more concepts in the field.
After graduation, I joined a venture accelerator during the summer. I made a mobile app to promote local restaurants and the best happy hour meal by the recommendation system. The program exposed me to like-minded innovators developing revolutionary software. I got to understand how to transform an idea into a viable business. The program taught me the essence of collaborating with other people while working on software. I discovered how to make captivating pitches for investors. Although it did not turn out to be successful, the venture accelerator exposed me to mentorship and educational opportunities. I realized that I still have a long way to go in computer programming. I interacted with talented programmers and got challenged to continue advancing my skills.
I am currently working as a Java developer. I am involved in the development of complex web-based applications. My duties are diverse throughout the development lifecycle of the applications, from design to testing. When clients have an idea, I hold sessions with them to understand their requirements. Then, I transform the requirements into stipulations. Where there are changes to be made to the requirements, I advise clients accordingly. I am responsible for undertaking all the testing, implementation, and maintenance of applications in our firm.
