Supplemental essay: a challenge related to data or analytics

In the current semester, I have been working as a research assistant under a professor in Finance. I performed research on the financial impact of technologies in the US and China. I collected data from news, academic journal, and various financial websites. From the collected data and initial analysis, I learned the difference and similarity of the two countries in terms of technology and finance. In the beginning, my challenging was the interpretation and correlation of the difference between the two sets of data. The same technology may create different financial impact to China and the US. To clear my confusion and better understand the data I collected, I discussed with other students and my supervising professor. Then I found that the finance and economy of the two countries are founded on and influenced by two different culture and politics, which in turn determine how technology impacts the finance and economy. From this lesson, I realized that data analysis has to be well based on a certain background so that storytelling can be reasonable and the future results can be predictable. After this experience, I am more eager to learn the skills in Applied Analytics and use them in my future career.
