The United States of America (USA) has a two-party system, where the primary two parties dominate the country’s political system. Indeed, it’s either the winning presidential candidates come from the Democrats or Republicans. The electorate prioritizes largely on two parties, where only one party might win if it has the majority of votes in the legislature. Although the USA allows the registration of multiple parties, only two parties with significant divergent interests dominate the country’s political system. In the last few decades, the presidential winning candidate during elections came from either the Democrat or Republican Party. Although other minor political parties present their candidates during elections, Americans only believe that it’s either a Democratic or Republican candidate is supposed to win the election. Joe Biden, the current president of the USA is a Democratic Party member. Before he took over the leadership of the USA, Donald Trump was the president who had won the elections under the Republican Party. Therefore, the USA has a two-party system, which limits the possibility of third political parties typically winning in the presidential elections.
The USA’s single-member district election representatives favor a two-party system instead of a multiparty. When it comes to selecting leaders in specific states, the Democratic and Republican Parties usually support their candidates so that they can dominate during the presidential elections. In most cases, the candidate with the highest number of votes becomes the winner during the polls. This system minimizes the chance of candidates from other parties to get a significant number of votes due to the lack of popularity and resources to seek votes from Americans. In other words, the USA’s electoral system compels a two-party system such that many citizens believe that their leaders will either come from the Democratic or Republican Party. Only two parties can successfully compete for the presidency and other political seats in the USA since the country does not recognize third parties. They cannot thrive given the influence and availability of resources that the Republican and Democratic Parties have. Besides, a third political party might be popular in the USA, but it is very difficult for it to have more seats than the primary political parties in the House of Representatives. For instance, even if a third party can a 20% of popular votes evenly distributed in the country, it has minimal chances of winning a single seat.
The Democratic and Republican Parties dominate the political system of the country. The system of representation in the USA is based on the party that gets the majority of votes in each district. In most cases, countries with multiparty democracies use a system that allows equal or proportional representation based on the number of votes. However, the USA gives smaller parties little opportunity for them to compete fairly in the districts.
