Cultural Sensitivity
Part 1: Introduction
Culturally competent nursing care is understood as developing an awareness of one’s own environment, thoughts, sensations and existence without letting it have too much influence on individuals from other backgrounds; demonstrating understanding and knowledge of the culture of the patient; accepting and respecting cultural dissimilarities; and adapting nursing care to be matching with the culture of the client (Mareno & Hart, 2014). Nursing practitioners need to develop cultural competency for them to be effective in creating rapport with their clients, and for them to correctly assess, develop, and execute nursing interventions intended to meet the needs of their patients. To deliver culturally competent nursing care, the nursing practitioner should clearly understand diverse cultural backgrounds.
Culturally competent nursing care involves an acceptance and awareness of cultural differences, self-awareness, knowledge of the culture of the patient, as well as adaptation of skills (Riley, Smyer & York, 2012). A nurse who is culturally competent has to develop cultural sensitivity, which means an awareness and usage of knowledge pertaining to sexual orientation, gender, culture and ethnicity to explain and understand situations as well as responses of individual patients in their environment. The nurse should assess every patient individually and should not make cultural suppositions as regards the health practices or beliefs of a patient (Mareno & Hart, 2014). Asking the client and the client’s family to describe what they perceive as the cause of disease and the health practices which the patient follows would allow for the development of an individualized teaching plan that is culturally sensitive.
Four guidelines which the registered nurse might employ in enhancing the ability to deliver nursing care that is culturally competent include the following: cultural awareness: this entails self-examination as well as thorough exploration of one’s own professional and cultural background (Riley, Smyer & York, 2012). An example which the culturally competent nurse applies in this guideline is when the nurse recognizes her own suppositions, prejudices, and biases regarding people who are different. If the health care provider is not aware of the influence of her own professional or cultural values, then he or she may engage in cultural imposition; that is, imposing her own values, beliefs and patterns of behaviour on another culture.
Cultural knowledge: this is the process in which the nurse seeks and obtains a sound educational foundation regarding diverse ethnic and cultural groups. In acquiring this knowledge base, the registered nurse should focus on the integration of 3 particular issues: health-related beliefs and cultural values, incidence and prevalence of disease, as well as efficacy of treatment (Caudle, 2013). Acquiring cultural knowledge regarding the patient’s health-related values and beliefs, for example, will require the nurse to understand the patient’s worldview. The worldview of the patient would explain how the client interprets her disease and ...
