Jerome Kern was a renowned musical theatre composer and was born in the year 1885 in the New York City. His initial involvement with music came through his mother who taught him to play the organ and piano after she realized that her son had an enormous aptitude for music. Jerome’s father wanted his son to join him in the family business nonetheless Jerome was utterly ingrained in music, and therefore it became quite a herculean task for him to perform well in the family’s business. When Jerome’s father realized that he could do nothing about his son’s love for music he decided to support him and therefore took him to New York College of Music where he could receive musical training and theatrical experience. After his college life, he worked in many music publishers as a pianist and a salesperson but he, later on, became the vice president of U.S. music publishing company. Jerome incredibly grew in his career and became one of the most adored composers of music for the theatre. Below, will be a discussion of the reason that made Jerome Kern a great musical theatre composer and a discussion of the lessons learned from his famous musical titled ‘Show Boat.’
Jerome Kern was an excellent musical theatre composer because he had a wide range of the primary compositional skills as well as the specific theatre songwriting skills. Songwriting for musical theatre is concentrated on the on the capability of the lyrics to pass precise narrative meaning, and therefore one must have the specific skills needed. Jerome was able to create great songs because he had the specific theatre songwriting skills needed. He was witty and less ambiguous in his lyric construction (Ruhlmann, 2017). To that end, the composer was able to convey a clear message because the audience could understand and relate to the lyrics. Jerome was also a great musical theatre composer because he had a good knowledge of theatre practices. Therefore, he was able to understand his role utterly and also be able to identify and solve problems that could occur during the collaborative process.
