Freedom of Speech
Most people, I included, used to believe or still believe that freedom of speech gives one the right to say whatever that is on their mind whenever they want to or feel like. If you are one of these people, am sorry to say that you are wrong and you need to understand fully what freedom of speech entails. Kindly bear with me as I take you through some of the important and often overlooked details regarding freedom of speech.
According to a 2013 article by Amnesty International UK, freedom of speech is “the right to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, by any means.” The article continues to state that freedom of speech could or does include “ideas of all kinds including those that may be deeply offensive.” A majority of us dwell on the latter bit and seem to believe that they can say anything and to whoever they meet on the road. However, as Kathleen Ann Ruane (2014) would tell you, any right comes with is responsibilities and these have to be respected. Every citizen is expected to honor these responsibilities and to ensure they are abiding by the law even when they are rightfully expressing themselves.
