Informative Speech
It’s time to take what you've learned from all of your prior presentations and add an element of research to create your Informative Speech. You have to be cautious when choosing an Informative topic, as it’s easy to think an Informative Speech and a Persuasive Speech as the same thing. However an Informative Speech JUST provides information. The most basic informative speech is the kind that teaches us (much in the way the Demonstration Speech taught us) something detailed about a topic with which we are already familiar. For instance, we know George Washington was our first President, but a lot of people don't know much about his life prior to the military or serving in office. That would make for an interesting Informative Speech.

With an informative Speech, you’ll want to establish credibility by referencing and citing your materials. For example: "In the July 13, 2007 edition of the New York Times, John Smith said that George Washington suffered from depression as a young boy." It is critical that you discuss where you found your information in order to maintain your credibility.

A few parameters:

1. Your speech should be 5-10 minutes in length.
2. Feel free to incorporate visual aids. This is not mandatory, but it makes for a better presentation, as we learned last week.
3. Cite a minimum of two different sources for your materials. Do NOT use Wikipedia as a source. Please copy and paste these sources into the ‘comments’ area when submitting or submit as a paper. I will evaluate your sources.
4. Be sure to have a good introduction, a body that contains at least three main points (with appropriate supporting evidence) and a conclusion that appropriately wraps everything up.

As always, you may draft your speech word for word, but be very careful not to simply read from your paper! We want eye contact and emotion! Good luck with this assignment and have fun!

Born in February 1732, George Washington was one of the finest American politicians. He served as the President from 1789 to 1797 and contributed to the success and prosperity of the United States. During the Revolutionary War of America, George was forefront as commander-in-chief, but it was not easy for him to defeat the rivals. At the age of 19, he was sent to the Virginia militia (Rider, 2012, p. 75). He fought in the Indian and French wars and spent a large part of his life in serving the humanity. George Washington engaged himself in health-related projects and was given the tough times by his competitors. By his death, he had gained significant public attention, and the scholarly polling ranked him among the best presidents in the history. Today, he is honored by a large number of public works, stamps, area names, the currency and monuments (Rider, 2012).
Fearless in the battles
As an officer, George Washington did not surrender himself on the battlefield, even though numerous officers were shot down all around him. In July 1755, he had taken charge of all collapsing lines of the Battle of the Monongahela. The enemies tried to shoot him to death, but nothing could stop Washington from moving on. At that time, four to five bullet holes were shot through his jacket (Cole, 2012, p. 31). Similarly, in January 1777, during the Battle of Princeton, George Washington led a handful of soldiers and officers and successfully attacked the British army. At no point, he lost had lost his hope even though he was standing a few yards from the enemies. They could easily target him, but for George Washington, the protection and safety of his state were far more important than his own life (Cole, 2012).
Never disrespected anyone or abused power
Only a few would be aware of the fact that George Washington had never disrespected or devalued anyone in his life. Whether they were his friends or competitors, he used to listen to everyone and always took the feedback seriously. Washington has always been admired as a president and general, but he never made the wrong use of his position or power (Ridgway, 2012, p. 112). In December 1783, He had surrendered his military commission to the Congress and confirmed his departure, giving value to military’s civilian control.
