Proposal for Migrating OSUIT's Servers and Workstations to the Cloud

Research Proposal Instructions:

Course Project Description

Below are listed the general specifications to move OSUIT's servers and workstations to the cloud.  You will create a proposal, in resposne to the Request for Proposal (RFP), to provide the plan, how to secure the cloud servers and provide access to the new cloud servers for all on-premise workstations.

Specifications are as listed:

  • OSUIT has employees in several different divisional units and buildings across campus, with a total of 510 workstations, servers and vSphere system
    • Admissions - 20 users - Windows 10 Pro
    • Accounting Services - 10 users - Windows 7 Pro
    • Bursar Services - 15 users - Windows 10 Pro
    • Library/Learning Resource Center - 6 Full-time users, plus another 20 workstations and 100 laptops to checkout
    • Student Services - 7 users - Windows 10 Pro
    • Facilities/Maintenance - 30 users - Windows 7 Pro
    • IT Services - 10 users - Windows 10 & Ubuntu Linux Server 20.04 LTS
    • 4 Schools:
      • SECT - 12 users - Windows 10 Pro
      • SASH - 60 users - Windows 10 Pro
      • STHE - 30 users - Windows 10 Pro
      • SCIT - 80 users - Windows 10 Pro
        • vSphere environment - 6 Servers, 200TB SAN and SonicWall NSA 3600 configured in a DMZ
    • Management (President, VPAA, Assistant VPs, CFO, 8 Dean/Asst Dean ) - 30 users - Windows 10
  • There are 10 physical servers located on campus and host all the corporate servers consisting of:
  • There are 4 additional branch servers used to replicate the following services:
    • Core University Databases in SQL
    • Web Server for OSUIT website hosting
    • Email Exchange server for Microsoft 365
    • SharePoint server

Management has determined the need to reduce their infrastructure cost and feel there is a better solution through virtualization.  At the end of your project proposal, provide a cost-benefit analysis for the savings that can be realized with Virtualization over the current system where hardware is refreshed every 5 years.

Deliverables: There is NO minimum page requirement; however, your paper must meet all requirements listed so your proposal covers all needs of OSUIT and provides relative information for your audience.

Proposal for Migrating OSUIT's Servers and Workstations to the Cloud
Introduction
This notion details a thorough plan for moving the servers and workstations used by OSUIT to a cloud-based environment. This paper favors increasing operational effectiveness and enhancing data security while concurrently lowering infrastructure prices by embracing virtualization and cloud technology. This concept presents a description of the existing Infrastructure, the provided cloud solution, proposed security measures, and an evaluation of the cost versus gain of the cloud solution.
Current Infrastructure Overview
OSUIT maintains several departments and structures spread over campus, with 510 workstations and servers. The following is a listing of the divisions, alongside the variety of users and working systems that correspond to everyone:
1 Admissions: 20 users - Windows 10 Pro
2 Accounting Services: 10 users - Windows 7 Pro
3 Bursar Services: 15 users - Windows 10 Pro
4 Library/Learning Resource Center: 6 Full-time users, 20 workstations, and 100 laptops
5 Student Services: 7 users - Windows 10 Pro
6 Facilities/Maintenance: 30 users - Windows 7 Pro
7 IT Services: 10 users - Windows 10 & Ubuntu Linux Server 20.04 LTS
Schools
1 SECT: 12 users - Windows 10 Pro
2 SASH: 60 users - Windows 10 Pro
3 STHE: 30 users - Windows 10 Pro
4 SCIT: 80 users - Windows 10 Pro
5 vSphere environment: 6 Servers, 200TB SAN, SonicWall NSA 3600 in DMZ
6 Management: 30 users - Windows 10
Proposed Cloud Solution
To accomplish what must be done, this paper suggests changing the Infrastructure presently located on-site to a setting hosted in the cloud. As a result, there will be an implementation of the following components:
1 IaaS stands for "infrastructure as a service." Transfer the currently deployed physical servers to a cloud issuer that provides Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Microsoft Azure (Patel et al., 2019). In-house hardware renovation will now not be critical any more thanks to this solution, which additionally offers scalability and flexibility.
2 Desktop as a Service (DaaS): Install digital computers for every user, granting them access to their workstations from any area and machine (Verma, 2022). By using a far-flung laptop protocol (RDP) client, users can join securely to their virtual desktops.
3 Serverless structure: The serverless design uses serverless computing services to host applications and services. Examples of such offerings encompass AWS Lambda and Azure Functions (Sutar et al., 2022). With this strategy, there is no requirement to manage or scale the servers, which consequences in each fee financial savings and an enhancement in performance.
