Assignment Description:

This assignment has two components: 1) it requires you to identify and describe a neighborhood that you will visit and analyze in your final paper, and 2) it requires you to consider Toronto as a city in a global context.

Part 1: Identifying a Neighborhood (300 – 400 words)

Your proposal should identify a specific urban neighborhood in the Greater Toronto Area. In the final assignment, you will need to visit the neighborhood in person. The neighborhood should be large enough to incorporate a diverse range of land use (i.e., residential, retail, public amenities, etc.), but small enough that you can realistically visit the neighborhood and produce a final analytical paper of between 1200—1500 words. In most cases, a few square blocks are appropriate.

In this section, you should the identify the neighbourhood and its boundaries (this does not have to be a formal boundary, like a census tract, but a boundary that you decide). You should describe the variety of land uses within the neighbourhood and its density. Finally, you should explain why you chose the neighbourhood.

Part 2: Toronto in a Global Context (300 – 400 words)

The second part of the assignment requires you to consider Toronto in a global context. There are three steps to this section:

  • You must choose an image that demonstrates Toronto’s global connections. This can be an image you take of a particular building, street or neighbourhood in the city, or it can be sourced from the internet.
  • Briefly describe image and say where it is from.
  • Drawing on either Massey (2008) or Sassen (2015), discuss the image and what it demonstrates about Toronto’s global context/connections.

Good Proposals Will:

  • Identify an appropriate and relevant neighbourhood.
  • Clearly explain the choice of neighbourhood and describe its features.
  • Identify an appropriate and relevant image.
  • Engage succinctly and thoughtfully with the course reading.
  • Make a clear connection between the image and course content.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of course content.
  • Be coherently and clearly written.
  • Follow the assignment’s technical requirements.

Technical requirements:

  • Either the Massey or Sassen reading from the course syllabus should be engaged with.
  • Images should be captioned and correctly cited.
  • Images should not include identifiable information of people.
  • Papers must be fully referenced using the APA style and include a reference list. More information on this reference style will be posted on Quercus.
  • The maximum word count for the paper is 800 words, excluding the reference list..
