OVERVIEW
The purpose of this assignment is to foster the critical skills of research organization and structure, and purposeful, high-quality research design. The objective is to understand, optimize, and formulate an effective structure for the Cold War Origins: Research Paper. Structure determines quality. Developing quality structures leads to quality work. As students work through the instructions of the assignment, they should understand the holistic nature of the task, the relationship between research purpose, focus (research question and the research problem), research quality (bibliography), and structure (organization and outline).
INSTRUCTIONS
This assignment includes the following four required elements:
Purpose Statement
Research
Problem
Bibliography
Rough Draft Outline
• Purpose Statement. After selecting a final essay topic from any subject of the course time period in Modern European History, state clearly what is the purpose of your proposed final essay? You may also build your purpose statement from selecting the subject of the Cold War and the research question on the origins of the Cold War.
• Research Question/Research Problem. In 50–100 words, discuss the research problem you are trying to solve. The problem statement should also contain the research question, the very question the essay will answer. Students are free to use the Research Question: What were the origins of the early Cold War, 1945-1955?
• Bibliography. Create a bibliography that demonstrates research design, the careful selection and combining of sources to create a well-crafted foundation of research, which is purposeful, effective, and useful. The final essay requires 20 quality sources for the research requirement of the assignment. In this exercise, select 10 sources and discuss the value of each and why you selected it. Did the source meet the course requirements articulated in announcements and assignments?
• Rough Draft Paper Outline.
Create a rough draft paper outline that includes an effective introduction, body, and conclusion. (This is not a draft of the paper but the outline only.) The objective of the rough draft of the outline is to create an initial or beginning order and direction. The outline is a rough draft that is neither conclusive nor refined but will be adjusted as research and analysis concludes. The final paper will demonstrate the articulated and polished presentation of the author's work.
