Provision of health care services has improved significantly over the years, but some issues remain cumbersome in the provision of quality care. The intent of this paper is to highlight the problem of staff shortage and increased turnover due to poor job satisfaction that have been detrimental in practice.
Issues
The department faces two significant challenges in providing quality medical services. These include staff shortage and poor job satisfaction rates, resulting in a turnover. There is no doubt that these issues are related and one precedes the other. Nurses form the largest group of professionals in the health care system. Additionally, they engage directly and indirectly in their practice with various stakeholders, including colleagues, patients, physicians, managers, and other health professionals. Consequently, the quality of care is significantly affected due to understaffing. Additionally, staff shortage leads to work overload among the available nurses, which leads to job burnout, demotivation, compromised patient care, as well as the lack of job satisfaction.
