Review of Gendered Construction and Discrimination
We live in the twenty-first century. A majority are aware that gender is a social construct and that gender discrimination is real. For many years, people believed in a social system where a particular gender was more knowledgeable, more able, and entitled. However, with the advent of gender rights movements came a change in the general world view of equality. Today, women occupy powerful positions in the corporate, political, and religious fields. However, to some extent, gender discrimination against women is still present.
In the past, I have experienced women being discriminated against directly by men who did not believe that women should engage in certain activities or discussions. Throughout my years in school, I have learned about discrimination against women and how this has changed. Therefore, I was surprised when I witnessed what I could only describe as blatant discrimination against women during a volunteer program in a local government office. The head of the department I was volunteering in had just received good information regarding an expansion project in the community. He was tasked with selecting a team within the department to head up the project. My desk was positioned right outside the department head's office.
