The Poem Of War
The poem was written during the First World War and it criticized the atrocities that the fighters went through as they were fighting. The title of the poem is Latin which means that it is sweet and respectable. At the end of the poem the author still uses Latin in the last line. This means that it was sweet and honorable for one to fight for his country. The theme of the poem is basically on war and emphasizes on the events that took place during this period of time. The First World War happened in a period that countries were fighting each other with the aim of gaining resources in other parts of the world. During this time, men were the militiamen that used to fight and forest and other hiding places were the battle fields of war. This paper is based on the poem by Wilfred Owen and seeks to explain to the reader on the vents that happened during the world war and why they happened.
From the poem, the author uses the imagery in showing an image of the men fighting in the war as hopeless. The author compares them like old beggars who beg on the streets wearing old sacks. In this regard, men fighting in the war remain poor and unfortunate in the society. Even after war they have nothing to gain from it. Furthermore, the war has worsened their situation more (Winn 24). The author indicates that they have been bent double which creates an assumption that their situation before was at least better than the current one. In this line, the author brings out an argument that the war was meant to be beneficial to the men and the countries fighting as well but this is contrary to the situation as it turns out to be hostile especially to the men whose ambitions have been shuttered. Through the context of imagery, the author also points out that the fighters were knocked-knees and they coughed like hags. In this case, we get the real picture of the men of war. The men are portrayed to be chronically poor in the sense that the author even thinks that they have been cursed in the mud. This means that they are leading a life that is full of troubles that Owen compares the curse as that of a pig that spends most of its time in the mud.
Owen also remembers the rockets that were sent high during the war in order to light up the men. This was a memorable event that brought joy to the men after the war. Moreover, the men walked towards their distant rest where they would relax themselves after the long journeys and fight against their enemies. The author shows that despite the tough war with the enemies the fighters also had some time to relax and rest after war. He also brings the image of soldiers marching. However, this is sarcastic as the Owen indicates that the soldiers were matching while they were asleep. The war was very tough and even some men had lost their boots but still they had to walk further. This brings out the qualities of endurance and perseverance of the hardships that they had to undergo in the war. Additionally, the concept of imagery is also emphasized at the point where the author indicates that as a result of the war blood was shed (Gohrab 19). These in particular were the men who were mostly involved in the battles. Those who survived were very tired and could not even h...
