The Effect of Oxygen on the Growth of Yeast

Research Paper Instructions:

Assignment Objective: Demonstrate that you understand the Scientific Method. Please start with your eBook and Redi’s experiment on flies, maggots and meat as you prepare your experimental proposal. I have added a figure from our previous textbook to demonstrate how the scientific method is based on a comparison. Find it in the Learning Materials. For this project, keep the above objective in mind. I am not looking for a Nobel Prize winning project, just a simple experiment that can show me that you understand the process. In fact, SIMPLE is the key word. First choose one of the observations from the assignment list(3) the effect of oxygen on the growth of yeast. Next develop a hypothesis that would explain the observation. You will make a prediction of the outcome of your experiment. Be sure you phrase this as an If/Then statement. Now design the experiment, include your expected results (these can be imaginary) and draw some conclusion that relates back to your hypothesis. A controlled experiment requires a comparison between the "normal" state of the environment and the test or "experimental" condition. The one thing you change between these two conditions is called your experimental variable. In order to be able to make your comparison, you need to keep all the other conditions the same. This allows you to compare the effect of the one change. These other conditions are called "control" variables. Present your report in the form of a lab report. It is not exactly APA, but is the format used for many scientific journals. Include the following headings: Introduction Hypothesis Prediction Methods Expected Results Conclusion I have included a sample experiment in the Instructor Files for you to use a template. The Effect of Oxygen on the Growth of Yeast
Introduction
Yeasts are understood as a kind of fungus and they are usually utilized in making bread, bread products as well as fermented beverages for instance wine and beer. Yeasts utilize oxygen gas and nutrients to produce energy (Richard, 2012).This experiment entails finding out the effect of oxygen on the growth of yeast cells. Two yeast cultures are prepared; one with oxygen and the other without oxygen. Observations are noted on the growth of yeast cells in the 2 cultures.
Hypothesis
Oxygen – both the presence and absence of it – has substantial effect on the growth of yeast. In the absence of oxygen gas, the growth of yeast will be slow. When oxygen is present, the growth of yeast will increase; it will respire aerobically thereby producing CO2 and water.
Prediction
If oxygen is present, the yeast cells will utilize it in breaking down sugars and produce water and carbon dioxide as waste products. The yeast cells will multiply. When oxygen is lacking, yeast cells would use an alternative pathway which does not necessitate the use of oxygen. This pathway will result in the production of ethanol and O2. The yeast cells would grow or increase in the absence of oxygen but not as much as when oxygen is present. The 1st pathway will produce substantially more energy for every sugar molecule used up, hence is the best pathway in the presence of O2.
Methods
This is a simple experiment and the following would be used to perform the experiment: 2 balloons; 2 plastic soft drink bottles; water; table s...
