Introduction: Suicide in the military has become a serious problem in the recent years. Concerning the history of military suicides, the rates have been considerably lower in the military compared to those found in the general population. However, with various wars in regions such as Iraq and Afghanistan, the rate of military suicide has been on the rise to the extent of surpassing the rate of the general public.
Recently the army has had the largest number of deaths the other military services. However, military leaders have indicated that the rates have been rising in all service (Carden, 2009). Carden et al. 2009 also reported that from 1993 to 2002 the rate of military suicide was the first major cause of death especially for the female veterans followed by male veterans Kaplan et al. 2009 showed that military veteran had a great probability of dying of suicide than those people in the general public.
Furthermore, various researchers indicated that people who were white, with more than twelve years of education and exhibited activity limitation were at greater risk of committing suicide. Other studies have shown that failing relationships, financial and psychological problems are some of the major stressors for the military members. Hence, it is significance to be aware of risks and help to intervene the military members who have challenges coping.
The Department of Defense has adopted relevant procedures in efforts to reduce suicide cases. They have mandated educational sessions on suicide prevention, and also the encouragement of proper military leadership to ensure that all the commanders are taking the necessary steps to take care of the service members under them.
The primary objective of this research paper is to discuss the issue on military suicide and the measures that can be adopted to reduce the cases that have been on the rise in the recent years.
Problem statement
Military suicide has been a big problem In United States in the past two decades.This has come to the attention of top leaders because the statistics indicate that the number of military death through suicides has been on the rise. Stresses by wars and some trips overseas, in 2012 United States soldiers killed themselves at the highest recorded rate ever and the death toll rising along with the years following and even going beyond the speed of ordinary civilians. Army commanders indicated that they were using all the effort that they had to reduce the cases and requesting for help from spiritual practitioners and psychologists to collaborate with the for more help. The military department is striving at all cost in trying to curb the number of lives taken by suicide.
According to DeSpelder (2005), when an individual has a real connection with the society, he or she has the capability of identifying the values to such an extent that her personal character becomes diminished. For instance, the values of a service man predominate the individual values.
