With improvements in healthcare services in the last few years, a constant rise in the geriatric population has been seen all over the world, most prominently in developing countries. It has been found that in most of the developing countries such as India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and others, geriatric populations are not provided with reliable medical facilities (Saracino et al. 2016). They are neglected by doctors, nurses and other medical professionals in both short-term and long-term care centers, which is a matter of great concern.
It is noticeable that the elderly are prone to developing chronic diseases due to age-related changes in the brain, increased depression and stress in later life and physical and mental weakness. If they are ignored by medical professionals in the long-term care centers, then they may develop serious diseases and will eventually lose their lives.
As far as the effects of a nursing staff training program are concerned, it is easy to say qualified, trained and experienced nurses can provide better services to geriatric populations as compared to those who are not trained to work in long-term facilities. This is because during a nursing staff training program, they are taught how to deal with old-age patients, how to diagnose and treat them, and how to answer the questions of their family members and friends carefully. If a nurse does not receive proper training, then it may become impossible for her to work with geriatric populations in long-term facilities in an efficient manner. It is because only well-trained and experienced nurses can help avoid issues within a long-term facility by handling multiple cases at a time.
