Assignment Instructions: Review the case study below. Consider the the three levels of a needs assessment; the organization, the job or task at hand, and the individual employee. Consider the questions, What is the purpose of the needs assessment? Is it individual based, unit based, or organization based? Is the need a national, state or institutional initiative? Use the six steps in conducting a needs assessment found in the Staff development nursing secret article on p 67. Identify the person or persons who has an interest in the assessment, and who needs to be included in the planning, implementation, and evaluation process. Determine the resources you will need to implement the assessment; human and financial. Select the format(s) you intend to use to gather your data, provide rationale based upon the evidence found in the literature. Once you select the method you intend to use to gather data, develop appropriate questions/statement etc. Identify your target audience(s). Time frame the needs assessment. Propose possible findings based on your format and questions/statements. Identify how you will analyze and evaluate your results so you can share them with the planning committee. Prepare a 3-4 page paper (the page limit does not include the title or reference page) using APA 6th ed guidelines. The use of 1st and 2nd level headings will help with organizing your content. See rubric for Development of a Needs Assessment CASE STUDY: At the last nursing department leadership meeting, the charge nurses and nurse managers were discussing the current and future state of the two medical/surgical nursing units. In discussing the current state of the nursing units – it was observed that there was an upward trend in central line and indwelling catheter infections. In an open discussion, it was noted that four new initiatives designed to decrease the incidence of infection were recently launched simultaneously. Some of the nurse leaders commented that it was confusing for the staff that all four initiatives were rolled out simultaneously. One of the charge nurses made the comment that there was confusion regarding expectations of performance, changes in practice, and the new procedures, since the four initiatives were implemented. The topic then switched to future state of the units where there was much discussion about what were the educational needs and priorities of the staff. In this paper, a needs assessment is developed basing upon the case study that has been provided. In conducting a needs assessment, 6 steps found in the staff development nursing article on p. 67 is used. A needs assessment is basically understood as a methodical process employed in identifying gaps between the desired and the existing performance in order to make informed decisions (Johnson & Puglia, 2012). Needs assessment is a way used to ask community or group members what they consider as their most significant needs. The results of a needs assessment survey would be utilized in guiding future action. In essence, the needs which would be rated as most significant are the ones that would be addressed (Johnson-Hanson, 2012).
Step 1: purpose: the purpose of the needs assessment is to ask about the needs that concern the nurse leaders and staff members at the healthcare organization. The nurse managers and charge nurses would be asked what they see as the most important needs of the healthcare organization. A need is basically understood as something that particularly relates to a specific community or group (Johnson & Puglia, 2012). It is noteworthy that 4 new initiatives meant to reduce the infection incidence at the healthcare organization were launched at the same time, and some nurse leaders saw this as confusing to the staff members. The key persons with interest in the needs assessment include the charge nurse, nurse managers and the entire nursing staff of this healthcare institution. These are the key persons since they have found the simultaneous rolling out of the 4 initiatives as confusing. Some of them have commented that there was confusion about expectations of alters in practice, performance, as well as the new procedures since the 4 initiatives were executed. These key persons – nurse leaders and nursing staff – would be included in the process of planning, implementation as well as evaluation. To carryout the needs assessment, 3 human resources would be required to do the survey and analyze the results. Only 3 people are required to implement this needs assessment given that the survey will be narrow. In regards to the financial resources, this needs assessment would necessitate $12,300, an amount that would be expended in paying the 3 persons who would help in implementing it; each getting $4,100.
Step 2: format: the formats that would be used to gather data are as follows: (i) Personal interviews would be used, and this will entail meeting face-to-face with the key persons and then asking them a few questions.
