Read Finkelman (2016), Chapter 13: Improving Teamwork: Collaboration, Coordination, and Conflict Resolution, section on Negotiation and Conflict Resolution, pp. 324-333.
Write a 5-7 page paper (not including the title or References pages). Follow APA format. Consult your APA manual, and consider using the APA resources provided by Chamberlain. Cite the course textbook and two scholarly sources. Background of the Conflict
When I joined my current practice, I was taken to the intensive care unit of the hospital. The unit consists of 12 beds. In each shift, there are four staff nurses and a floor manager. I have observed over the last two months; nursing turnover has been high in our unit compared to the rest of the units. The high turnover in the unit is because of poor communication among the nurses, lack of respect among the colleagues, and the negative attitude of the physicians towards the nurses. Three weeks ago, I noticed that the patients in the unit were suffering due to the unresolved conflict among the staff members.
For instance, while on duty, the physician came to check on the progress of her patient who was suffering from unitary tract infections. The patient was also suffering from diabetes mellitus. The physician started shouting at all of us because the nurses during the night shift had not catheterized patient. Moreover, the physician complained that the night shift nurses missed administering the insulin dosage. The condition of the patient had deteriorated because of the conflict among the staff members in the unit. As a result, the patient ended up stating for an additional one week, which could not be the case if we had addressed the problems facing us. The floor manager was not willing to listen to the issues we raised in the unit. The manager instead ignored our concerns and used the avoidance strategy. Due to his autocratic nature of leadership, the staff members were demoralized which led to a majority of them to leave the job.
The Stages of Conflict
The four stages of conflict are latent, perceived, felt, and manifest. The latent stage entails anticipation of conflict. The stage is marked by an increased tension as individuals anticipate that a conflict may arise (Finkelman & Kenner, 2016). During the initial stages of the conflict, I could think that the lack of communication among healthcare professionals in the unit would become problematic in the future. Although I did not discuss with any other nurse about the issue, I could see the dissatisfaction among the nurses and also the patients.
The perceived stage entails the recognition that a conflict exists. Although the conflict may not be discussed, individuals can perceive that something is not right (Finkelman & Kenner, 2016). Perception is critical because it determines whether or not a conflict exists. After some time, nothing took place to improve the situation. I could perceive that the failure to address some of the challenges we were facing could escalate to a bigger problem. I could also see that the situation was getting worse each day.
The felt stage takes place once individuals start to have feelings regarding the conflict like anger (Finkelman & Kenner, 2016). The level of stress increases at this stage of the conflict. At this level, the failure to address the underlying issues may complicate the conflict. The progress of the conflict depends on how the staff members feel open to discuss their feelings and opinions.
