Effects of Parental Incarceration on Children’s Developmental Process
Parental incarceration has adverse impacts on the development process of children between the ages of 0 and 6 years old. In particular, the development process entails how a child grows emotionally, psychologically, and physically and learns to think, walk, communicate, and socialize with others. The early years of a child’s growth and development are vital and significantly contribute to the way that children learn and see the world around them. During the first years of the child’s life, parental presence is critical to the manner the child acquires thinking, social, communication, behavioral, and emotional skills. Children’s relationships with their parents and life experiences shape their development process during the first six years. Parental incarceration has adverse effects on children’s developmental process between the ages of 0 and 6 years since it is during this time that these young ones require their parents’ presence the most for emotional, physical, and psychological growth.
Answer 1
The number of children affected by parental incarceration continues to rise as many adults are arrested and sentenced to jail. From 1991 to 2007, there was a 79% increase of parents in federal and state prisons. The number of children with incarcerated parents increased by 80% (Warren, Coker, & Collins, 2019). In 1999, more than 130,000 children had imprisoned mothers, and over 1.3 million had imprisoned fathers. In the United States of America (USA), one in five young people under five years has an incarcerated parent. Additionally, 1 in every 28 children has one incarcerated parent (Warren, Coker, & Collins, 2019). The first people that children forms relationships with are parents. When a child is born, he or she grows in the company of his or her parents and starts learning new things. In that light, when the father or mother is incarcerated, the child’s developmental process is affected adversely. Joyce Arditti depicts that when a parent is incarcerated, children encounter maladjustment, school difficulties, traumatic separation, relationship instability, behavioral problems, family isolation, and caregiver stress (Arditti, 2014). For example, when a mother is incarcerated after birth, the child might be exposed to health complications due to malnutrition, stress, and the lack of good care. Children aged six years and below learn whether the environment is secure and safe or not through parental love. The absence of a parent when the child is below six years can lead to numerous problems in communication, behavioral change, learning, health, and eating habits.
Parents significantly influence their children’s physical and cognitive developmental processes directly or indirectly. At the beginning of chapter six, Arditti shares the story of Selene Diaz, whose father was incarcerated when she was 11-years-old. Diaz struggled emotionally due to the isolation at school and joined a gang group in the inner-city neigh...
