It has been falsely stated that smoking marijuana is harmless and does not affect the health of marijuana/cannabis smokers, and secondary smokers, but this is not the case. For instance cognitive abilities, I visited a cousin relative at Aurora, Colorado last summer who claimed that marijuana is harmless and claimed cannabis does not affect his daily activities, yet there is evidence it does affect cognitive abilities. Wilkinson (2013) pointed out that, medical marijuana is regulated so even the side effects are easier to monitor, but there are many who people buy marijuana from dealers without knowing the potency of the marijuana and impact on their health. The belief that the harmful effects are exaggerated and it is not a like tobacco is also a common argument among others like him. However, he is wrong since there are strains containing carcinogenic substances, but medical use of marijuana has resulted in people focusing on the benefits only. Additionally, marijuana is sometimes the gateway to drug that cause substance abuse addictions that worsen health outcomes. There has been growing support for the therapeutic use of marijuana, but this reinforces the perception of low risk, especially, among young people that marijuana is harmless just like medicine is good.
Even though, more studies have legalized marijuana use and sale in the past decade and even for therapeutic use, illegal drug dealers are still involved in the marijuana market. One example of the unintended consequence of legalizing marijuana is increased drug activities from Mexican drug cartels. After California legalized marijuana, there was a bigger market across the border California, and fueled illegal drug trade in both California and Mexico. Allowing the sale and consumption of marijuana in limited spaces only addresses legalization of what is accounted for in the market (Keyes et al., 2016).
