The three-decade long Guerrilla Girls’ protests and demonstrations are centred on the fight against apparent discrimination against women and people of colour in the art world. While much progress has been seen from the group’s efforts, the struggle of this New York based activist group is far from over (Baumann, 2017). The anonymous group that hides its identity under a gorilla mask has been active in a number of projects and doing a range of posters and books to convey a message that something needs to be done in the art world. The group uses wit and humour to communicate facts that may potentially cause a backlash, but gains the audience and critics through creative art. This paper describes three of the many posters the Guerrilla Girls’ group has used in communicating their message to the public and influential people in society.

Poster 1: the US Senate is more progressive than Hollywood, Update (Guerrilla Girls, 2018)
In 1999, the anonymous Guerrilla Girls’ group ran a sharp campaign that criticised the liberal film industry claiming that female representation in politics was more progressive compared to Hollywood. The campaign has been brought back in 2019 now backed with the San Diego State University Centre for the Study of Women in Television and Film (Fuster, 2019). From figures reported by the Celluloid Ceiling study, the group reported that women directed only 4% of the total top100 films produced in 2018. Surprisingly, this number has remained same since 20 years ago, making the group to conclude that the U.S. Senate is even more progressive on gender issues than Hollywood. The study also finds out that women in the Senate had increased from 9% in 1999 to 25% in 2018, thus their slogan “Hollywood is still worse than the U.S. senate” as depicted from Poster 2 above.

Poster 2: “If you get keep women out they get resentful.” (Guerrilla Girls, 2018).
In history, gender activists and feminists have been typecast as haters who want to brainwash society to allow women reside over men, but this is not the case. In Poster 2 above, there is a clear image that communicates the resentment women have when separated from their male counterparts in a humorous fashion. The poster references an old Chinese text, Confucians Analects 17:25, that shows how the upper class has been ruled by misogynistic thoughts that make them forget about the plight of women in society (Guerrilla Girls, 2018...
