1.Do you believe America has become a culture that is suspicious of resilience and emotional reserve? Why or why not? (p123)
2. It takes a willful blindness to believe that other cultures lack a meaningful framework for understanding the human response to trauma. We pathologize their reactions. We say: “You don’t know how to live in this situation.” We take their cultural narratives away from them and impose ours. It’s a terrible example of dehumanizing people. (p107) If this statement is true, how do you think this can be avoided when we provide humanitarian aid to people in other countries?

Ethan Watters's book Crazy Like Us delves into the subject of the wave that brought PTSD to Sri Lanka, which fits numerous assumptions on how different cultures perceive and process traumatic events and the impact of Western psychological ideologies on processing trauma. The author narrates how an American, Debra Wentz, a lead executive in Mental Health Agencies, witnessed the unforeseen events of the tsunami in Sri Lanka, which occurred coincidentally while she was on vacation there. While Wentz already felt the psychological effects of the tragic tsunami, she firmly develops the notion that there will be substantial psychological distress among the people.
