Marriage and Suicide in China
Annually, China experiences a large number of deaths as compared to other nationalities. Suicide acts as the most significant contributor to Chinese deaths. Young people in rural areas tend to commit suicide often as compared to those living in urban areas. People consider marriage a protective measure towards evading suicidal thoughts and actions. Most young people in China rural homes use pesticides to commit suicide.
In most cases, after diagnosis, the reports indicate zero mental health issues. Just as depression and other related mental health issues contribute to suicidal patients in China, other factors such as family, marriage, social support, education, social-economic status, and physical health also contribute towards suicide. In the West, marriage is a valuable tool towards eliminating suicide amongst young people. Factors such as family issues, infertility, and relationship-related conflict introduce young women into suicide. The pressure exerted on young women in regards to meeting society’s expectations.
According to Emile Durkheim’s theory of social integration, family and marriage act as sources of social support, hence reducing suicidal cases. Unfortunately, the idea of social support from unions and families does not apply to the local Chinese. Zhang (318) states that, in the past, the Chinese used to practice arranged marriage whereby rich people used to adopt their future daughters-in-law. The local Chinese still practice arranged marriages, but the idea does not stop young people from committing suicide. The tension between a mother and her young daughter-in-law always contributes to suicide amongst young women. Zhang (320) indicates that mothers do not welcome their daughter-in-law well into their families. The idea of “who controls who” is a family structure that subjects young women into the hands of their mother-in-law is.
Infertility issues, relationships with husbands, and other relatives contribute towards suicide amongst young Chinese women. Zhang (324) elaborates that young women undergo a lot of social pressure, especially in the circumstances associated with barrenness. The family tends to look for loopholes in connection with infertility and return that frustrate the young woman. The community blames the woman without doing their due diligence, hence hurting the woman in question’s feelings.
