Re: Covid-19 Count & Rates In Los Angeles County
What is Covid-19?
Covid-19 is a highly infectious airborne disease caused by a novel virus called Coronavirus (WHO, 2019). The virus was first reported in Wuhan city in China. It is believed to have begun in animals, but later on, humans got infected from the animals. Since then, transmission has occurred among humans at such speedy rates that the disease was transmitted globally.
Being a novel virus, scientists are learning about the virus as the pandemic progresses. At first, it seemed like the virus would be able to be contained. Still, in March of 2020, the high rate of cases reported outside China led to General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus- the director at World Health Organization, to announce that the virus outbreak could be categorized as a pandemic. By that time, there had been more than 100,000 reported cases in 114 countries. The number of deaths recorded as a result of the virus was over 4,000.
The virus was hard to contain with the effects being transmitted from a person to another through air droplets. As with any airborne pandemic, the immediate response towards a case identified as positive was isolation and quarantine as doctors worked tirelessly to try and find something that could contain the symptoms. In the beginning, the signs were blanketed as fever, dry cough and pneumonia-like flu. As more research is being done on the novel virus, it has been discovered that it affects people differently, but there are still general symptoms to the disease Covid-19 which are: -
* Severe aches and pains
* sore and dry throat
* diarrhoea and irregular bowel movements
* Eye inflammation and infection
* Migraine like headaches
* sense of taste or smell could get lost
* Extreme body fatigue and joint pain
* a skin rash, or discoloured fingers or toes
* short breath or difficulty in breathing
* pain in the chest or pressure
* speech or movement loss
`There is currently no vaccine or treatment for Covid-19. Once diagnosed, medical measures are taken to help your body to fight and develop antibodies that will combat the virus. Thus, currently, the most effective way to prevent or curb the transmission of the virus is to keep a social distance from people with symptoms of Covid-19 or any other respiratory disease until confirmed via a test that they are not Covid-19 positive. However, this may not always be possible, so the next best thing to do is maintain a high level of hygiene, wearing face masks and physical distancing to prevent transmission of bacteria and viruses. Researchers have proved the tips below to be quite useful in the prevention of transmissions.
* Handwashing using soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Making sure that you rub thoroughly between fingers, knuckles and wrist area.
* Avoid touching your face, eyes, nose, or mouth; you may not always know whether or not your hands are contaminated.
* Avoid going out if you're feeling unwell or having a cold or flu symptoms.
* Practice social distance- ensure at least six feet (2 meters) distance from other people.
* Normali...
