Alternative Genre: A Unique Community and its Socialization Groups
This last assignment asks you to write in an alternative genre, i.e., something that is not an essay, but to do so addressing the topic of the course. Here are some examples of alternative genres:
Correspondence/letter
Dialogue
Short story
Poem
In terms of content, think here that you want to convey to an audience something you learned in this course, perhaps something you were surprised to learn and that you think others might be surprised to learn. Consider too that you want to explain to them why this something you learned might be important and for what reason. Does it help us address or gain insight to some problem? Does it show something that we tend not to see? Your response does not need to be very long - 1-2 pages is enough - but you want to show engagement with our topic.
In the same document, add a reflection of about 200-300 words (single spaced) that describes what you gained from the alternative genre. What was it like to write in this different form? How did it differ from writing an essay? How did it shape or influence your thinking?

A Unique Community and its Socialization Groups
In Boston, a unique community existed in terms of its structural organization and could only be understood by studying the various groups that characterized it. The community was organized into groups, which formed the main way of socializing. Also, the groups determined the activities in which members were involved. For instance, one could best identify who a member is in the community by the group they subscribe to. However, identifying such groups required a closer relationship with the community members to study their ways.
The groups in this unique society included corner boys, college boys, Racketeers, and politicians. The names of the groups make this community a unique one. The groups in this community could be understood only through closer observation to understand what they stood for. For instance, the corner boys were a group where members were referred to by their nicknames and could only meet at a specific street corner. The group was huge and was known for loyalty and personal relations. Most were unemployed and were involved
