Population Growth in Tennessee by County

Other (Not Listed) Instructions:

Please upload a Word document (preferred) or simply copy and paste everything into your Discussion thread. (Don't use Google docs –– oftentimes, students have trouble granting me access to it, which impedes my ability to grade the assignment in a timely manner). Whichever route you choose, please just double check that everything opens and is formatted as intended and that your hyperlink to your data visualization works and is interactive (see Part 1 for details).
Write a series of media content pieces regarding the distribution and growth of Tennessee's population. You must complete each of the four parts outlined below in order to receive full credit.
Part 1. Analyze population growth in Tennessee by county
To complete the final exam, you will use the techniques you learned from the "Spreadsheet Basics for Journalists" page to analyze the Tennessee county population estimates in the table at the bottom of the page. Specifically, identify the 10 Tennessee counties that saw the largest population gains between 2010 and 2018, both in terms of the number of residents and in terms of the percent increase in the number of residents. (See my hints at the bottom of this page for a little more guidance on your analysis).

To access the full assignment prompt, go to the "Spreadsheet Basics for Journalists" page and scroll about half-way down to the section titled "An exercise: Tennessee population county estimates." Read through the assignment prompt, then use the table beneath it to analyze the dataset using Google Spreadsheets.
Once you have completed your analysis, produce a suitable data visualization to go along with your story, share the visualization, and include the URL to the visualization at the bottom of your story in Part 2. Follow the mini course tutorial for how to make your visualization both online and interactive, so that when I mouse over the visualization's elements, the visualization responds by showing pop-up windows. Do not simply include an image/PDF/screenshot of the visualization. I recommend that you limit your visualization to showing population increases in the state's 10 largest counties (otherwise, it will be impossibly tiny and detailed to read if you include all of the state's counties).

*Part 2. Write a Straight News Story
Use the fictional background information provided within the exercise prompt, along with your analysis findings, to write an approximately five to eight paragraph straight news story about the results of your analysis. Click here for a direct link to the background information page.

All of the details about the focus of your story, as well as the 5 W's and several direct quote options, are outlined in this page, so please read it carefully and make sure you are focusing your story accordingly.
You must include at least one properly setup and presented quote in your story (the possible quotes are included in the fictional background info page).
You must include the URL to your online and interactive data visualization at the bottom of your story.
You must follow each of the Six Rules for Writing a Straight News Lead, as well as all other Assessment criteria listed in each of our Lead and Story writing assignments. Please review these closely for reference.
*Part 3. Write a Radio Broadcast Story
Use the same fictional background information and analysis findings to write a radio broadcast version of your story. It should be approximately 10- to 20-seconds.
You must follow the dramatic unity structure of broadcast journalism.
You must follow all of the Assessment criteria listed in our Radio writing assignments.
Part 4. Write an Print Advertisement
Use the same fictional background information and at least one key finding from your analysis to write an approximately 75-word print ad promoting Rutherford County. Assume your ad will be printed and distributed in a quarterly magazine by the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce. (An area's chamber of commerce is usually supported by area business owners and promotes business, growth and tourism in the area). So, your ad should seek to sway any of these interests to visit and/or relocate to Rutherford County, citing its population growth insights from your analysis and any relevant details from the background info page.
At the end of your ad:
You must include a written description of an illustration that would accompany your ad in the magazine.
You must include a brief discussion of the need or needs to which your ad appeals.
Some hints:
You'll probably notice that the list of 10 counties with the largest *population count* increases differs from the list of 10 counties with the largest *percent increases* in their populations. So, when you follow the assignment directions to "identify the 10 Tennessee counties that saw the largest population gains between 2010 and 2018, both in terms of the number of residents and in terms of the percent increase in the number of residents," you'll get similar, but not identical, lists.
Which list should you use to make your graphic? And which list should you write about in your story and your ad?
The short answer is: It's up to you.
Notice that the county in which most of your audience lives - Rutherford County - occupies the same position on both lists: second place, behind Davidson County on one list, and behind Williamson County on the other. So each list - and each graphic - has about the same news value as the other, given the interests of the audience you're writing for, and a key principle of media writing is that what you're writing must always be shaped by the interests of the audience you're writing for.
The percent increase is just an alternative way of thinking about which counties saw the biggest increases in their populations, just like, in Part 2 of the tutorial, it was an alternative way of thinking about which of the department heads got the biggest raise. Go with the approach that you think communicates best. Pick one or the other for your graphic. As for your stories, mention one, the other, or even both, if you like. There is no approach that I secretly favor and will penalize you for not adopting. All I want is clear, well-organized writing.

The table shows ten counties with the highest population increase in Tennessee from 2010. It also shows the percentage increase during the same period. The data shows that Rutherford is the county with the highest increase among the 10, with Sevier coming last. Tennessee has 39 counties, some of which have increased their population while others have dropped, such as Madison and Morgan
Part 2
Growing Rutherford County despite a surge in increased population from 2010 to 2018.
According to William Fulks, founder and director of "Keep Rutherford Green," "growth is inevitable, but too much growth can do serious, irreversible damage in too short a time." Rutherford has experienced the most growth among the 39 counties, with a population increase of 161,188. The 23.2% increase has raised concerns about the county's ability to manage the needs of its population.
A 'no' to a growth rate is on the agenda due to the fear that the area's natural resources will fail. Growth requires the building of roads for easy transport, which facilitates efficient production and movement of goods. However, these actions disturb topsoil, cause pollution, produce sewage, and cover up extinct green spaces.
It is only a matter of time before the effects of growth are felt with the depletion of resources. Unfortunately, the disruptions are difficult for the environment to recover from; thus, the county will have modern facilities but no resources to keep them running.
Increased population also brings forth the issue of housing, meaning the county is forced to build more houses. Consequently, the land is filling rapidly due to public and private housing structures. The houses replace the existing natural habitat turning the county into a soulless utopia of concrete structures. Uncontrolled urbanization can also bring overcrowding, crime, and political instability. Also, new settlers in Rutherford might be met with opposition and hostility from the current residents as resources dwindle CITATION AAO91 \l 1033 (Osoro, 1991).
