LITERATURE REVIEW WRITE-UP GUIDELINE
Purpose: The literature review is meant to ensure that your work builds upon the work of other researchers rather than duplicating work that has already been done. It also gives you a chance to look for clues and inspiration from previous research. Finally, the literature review helps you show that you are saying something new.
Write-up: Select the most relevant articles to your research that you have read so far. For each article, write up a paragraph or two explaining what the article studied, what its research methods were, what its conclusions were, and whether you would use or extend the article’s methodology. Also, literature reviews are not just reviews of what has been done, but discussions of the issues. Do not simply summarize what you have read, but discuss how these previous contributions help us understand the problem you are interested in. As you do your own reading, look carefully at the literature reviews in the articles you are reading. This will give you more ideas about how to write your literature review.
Remember the following points as you do your literature review:
• What is the research question being addressed and why is it relevant?
• How do the authors use theory to address the question being posed?
• What approach is used to present the theory (mathematical model, graphs, concepts…)?
• Does the theory lead to clear, testable hypotheses that help answer the posed question?
• What type of data is used in the analysis?
• Is the data appropriate and adequately described?
• What empirical approach is used to test the hypotheses?
• Does the empirical approach make sense given the available data?
• Are there alternative techniques that could have been used?
• Are the results clearly presented and explained in line with the proposed hypotheses?
• Do conclusions follow from the analysis?
• Are appropriate policy implications drawn?
• Overall, does the paper contribute to our understanding of economics, i.e., does it add value to the literature? How?
• References should be listed at the end of the paper following only one style of format consistently.
• In your citations, don’t write the full title of the article. The name of the author with publication data in parenthesis is sufficient. See how authors do their citations in their articles.
Your literature review should be at least 3-5 pages long, double spaced and you can continue to update your literature review as you read more articles.
THE EFFECT OF ORGANIC FOOD ON ECONOMY

Organic food is increasingly becoming popular as many people are moving away from conventional and genetically modified products. In particular, it refers to meat, dairy products, eggs, and poultry produced in the absence of growth hormones, antibiotics, synthetic fertilizers, ionizing radiation, and pesticides. Organic agricultural activities foster the conservation of biodiversity, protection of farming resources, and ecological balance. The consumer’s demand for organic food is rising due to the societal concerns pertaining to environmental issues, animal welfare, and food safety. Besides, organic farming has proven to be profitable economically in both the domestic and international market. North American and European countries are among some of the places that have benefited from organic agriculture. The federal government encourages organic agriculture by giving subsidies to farmers. For this reason, organic food has significant effects on the economy, which is the reason why the state is promoting this type of farming in the United States of America (USA).
Edward Jaenicke and Julia Marasteanu (2018) portray that organic farming has positive impacts on domestic economies. Researchers focused on organic agricultural clusters or hotspots. They considered these hotspots as the endogenous variable. Marasteanu and Jaenicke conducted a control experiment on ordinary farming hotspots to ensure that all the advantages emanating from organic farming were, in fact, coming from the organic component. The results obtained by these researchers affirmed that organic hotspots reduce the rate of poverty by increasing the household income (Marasteanu and Jaenicke 2018). Some of the regions where the unemployment rate was high before organic farming started were found to be doing well economically after the adoption of this type of agriculture. Another study by Heru Irianto (2015), confirmed the research outcomes by Marasteanu and Jaenicke. Irianto researched to understand the attitude of consumers toward organic food using the “theory of planned behavior (TPB).” The researcher used different variables, namely buying intentions, gender, price of organic products, health consciousness, attitude of consumers, and environmental consciousness (Irianto 2015, 17 – 18). He found out that many people regardless of their gender were willing to buy organic food since they believed that such products do not compromise their health, and at the same time, by purchasing this type of food they contribute to conserving the environment.
On the contrary, Pham et al. (2019) used multivariate data analysis, which applied structural equation modelling. Specifically, researchers found out that the two primary factors that significantly contributed to the development of positive attitude toward organic food include the concern of food safety and health consciousness (Pham et al. 2019, 540 – 44). Although this type of food is sold at slightly higher prices than conventional products, many consumers prefer purchasing them since they believe that they are preserving the environment and promoting healthy lifestyles.
