Promoting youth engagement in our community is paramount to facilitating the development of children and young people. This can be achieved through after-school programs that provide activities such as tutoring and music, among others. According to Sjorgren et al. (2021), after-school programs offer children and young people safe spaces and prevent problem behaviors that are likely to occur outside a school setting. In addition, these after–school programs promote youth engagement and enhance their social, emotional, and academic development.
As such, I propose implementing a program that will facilitate after-school tutoring as well as music and art. According to Oberle et al. (2019), the extracurricular activities offered in after-school programs promote social interaction because children and youths interact with their peers while engaging in various activities. In addition, after-school tutoring allows children and youths to stay focused on their education. As a result, they lack time to engage in other vices or unproductive activities after school. As Philip and Gill (2020) reveal, communities that offer after-school tutoring opportunities enhance the academic success of children and youth participating in tutoring activities. Our community can support our youths academically by implementing after-school tutoring.
