Discuss the risk factors and the connection to the etiology of the initial injury to the cell/tissue/organ.
Type 2 diabetes is mainly caused by the body’s resistance to insulin. First of all, insulin is a hormone that is produced by the pancreas. Its main function is to regulate glucose levels in the bloodstream. After its secretion, insulin induces cells to absorb glucose thereby reducing its levels in the blood. However, there are instances when the body resists insulin, and this creates a problem that the Medical News Today (2020) terms as prediabetes. When people have high insulin resistance, they are said to have prediabetes, and the CDC estimates that “approximately 88 million American adults – more than 1 in 3 – have prediabetes.” The effect of prediabetes on the pancreas is that it causes the organ to overwork as it will be forced to work harder to meet the insulin deficiency in the body. However, with time, and the dysfunction of the Islets of Langerhans, the pancreas becomes limited in its ability to handle the levels of insulin needed and slowly the prediabetes becomes type 2 diabetes.
Some of the risk factors that contribute to insulin resistance include obesity, smoking, a sedentary lifestyle, and high blood pressure. However, it should be noted that even though the above risk factors can lead to an increase in insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes has a higher chance of developing when this resistance coincides with the dysfunction of the Islets of Langerhans. So, each of the risk factors impedes the production of insulin and in the end glucose levels in the blood increase. This increase is usually followed by the production of more insulin. However, on some particular occasions, as will be shown later, the Islets of Langerhans cells are inhibited in their production of insulin.
