The Connection Between Evidence-Based Practice and the Quadruple Aim
The Quadruple Aim (QA) concept was conceived from its antecedent idea of the Triple Aim (TA) after the realization that a highly effective and productive healthcare organization demands an engaged and fecund workforce at its core. Before the concept of QA, many organizations in the United States and around the world had adopted the principles of TA in redesigning healthcare systems and transitioning their focus to population health. Formulated by Donald Berwick and colleagues in 2008, the TA framework was particularly aimed at three goals: improve patient experiences of care, improve population health, and reduce the cost of care (Sikka et al., 2015). QA emerged to address some limitations in TA add the fourth element of improving the experience of care provision. This addition was made to include the healthcare workforce left out in the former model of TA. In achieving its objectives, significant efforts have been invested in assessing how evidence-based practice (EBP) can enhance the QA framework to improve care. Evidence from previous studies has shown that evidence-based care might help reach the goals of Quadruple Aim, such as improving patient experience, the work-life of health care providers, population health, and reducing the cost of care.
Engagement in EBP among nurses has been identified as an invaluable practice in improving patient care, outcomes, and overall experiences of patients (Kim et al., 2016). Crabtree et al. (2016) have shown that nurses completing an EBP course that teaches the theory, practice, and implementation of EBP portray significant improvements in their nursing practice. Kim et al. (2016) also have healthcare organizations that embrace a culture that emphasizes the importance of making clinical decisions based on evidence have better outcomes in enhancing patien...
