Objective of the Journal Entry
During my practicum, I engaged with many healthcare professionals, in addition to my preceptor, and gained a lot of knowledge and experience in nursing practice. The objective of this journal entry is to reflect on the development of my leadership, management, and delegation skills during the practicum.
Brief Description of Clinical Practicum Experience
During my clinical practicum, I got an opportunity to develop my leadership, management, and delegation skills through my interactions with patients and the hospital staff. I had a chance to demonstrate an informal leadership role at the bedside through my interaction with patients. For instance, I made effective clinical decisions, which contributed to safe patient care. I was accountable for ensuring that these patients were assessed, medicated, and communicated about their health conditions. These required me to demonstrate effective leadership skills such as communication, accountability, and emotional intelligence. In addition, I had an opportunity to delegate tasks to healthcare technicians. Delegation is a huge part of nurse leadership, which gives nurses more time to perform high-level tasks such as clinical decision-making. I effectively delegated tasks such as wound redressing and vital signs measurement to the technicians. This gave me more time to assess patients and make clinical judgments about their care.
