Introduction
Back to the woods is the work of Angel Haze. Haze was not herself before this album, hence, composed it as a sign that she is back to where she was previously. She has used the music to parse that she is back to herself, a state with no fear or problems. She terms it as woods, hence, the term ‘back to the woods’. Haze has used the music to express the emotional struggles she went through after her last album. Beyond the music, Haze went through personal issues that had a great impact on her life. The struggles include depression, suicide, physical and sexual abuse. For example, her relationship with Ireland Baldwin broke. She also had to see a psychologist to help her solve health problems. Thus, on recovery from these challenges she composed this album to parse the feelings she went through. She terms it as a ‘project’. It confronts the strains to overcome harm, whether it is from family or romantic loss. Hence, the album focuses on Haze’s life changes and challenges she faced back to the woods.
Alignment with religious worldview in the album
Musicians in their songs commonly use specific religious worldview. Haze has employed them in some of her songs. In the song ‘the woods’ we have terms like ‘I swear to God’. Which is a common phrase individuals use to bring the sense of truth in their speech. The phrase has been used to bring out the undisputable truth that it was the only time she felt that she belonged to somewhere. The term ‘save me’ is also used in the song. It is commonly applied by Christian when they want help from God. Maybe to be saved from sins or stressful situations. However, in the track, Haze uses the phrase demonstrating the fact that she was desperate but never asked God to save her, but God saved her. The term going home is utilized in the track ‘D-day’ which reveals Haze’s determination in going to the woods. This slogan is commonly used by Christian when changing from sinful life to Christianity. Hence, the term refers to a home of new life in Christ.
In the song ‘Detox’ Haze says they were gods in the world, this refers to her previous life before the change. She attributes to the fact that they were great in the world but what they were doing brought her into trouble. The word sin is also used. It shows she used to go against God’s teaching. Eventually, in the track she humbly asks God to save her from the troubles she was facing. The track ‘Gods’ has religious worldview title. Furthermore, it talks about God’s promises to human beings. It starts with the aspect of dancing and rejoicing forever, most likely at heaven. Lastly, it says about the teaching of aura shields by God, which are meant to save His people from enemies. The track ‘Bruises’ has the word angels in the first line. Here Haze remembers the angels that made God’s shape in her bed dur...
