Minority characters in television series and movies take different forms with each of their representations portraying equally distinct values or principles that are characteristic of society’s perceptions across the social, political, and economic divide. Minority characters may, for instance, display stereotypical values or principles perceived by particular groups of people or society at large as the descriptive features of a given social identity. However, there are instances where the minority characters may be used to enlighten society about the adverse effects of perpetuating stereotypical identities of a group of people. Television series and movies showcasing the rise of minority characters against the misconceptions of their cultural orientations to becoming successful individuals in society make for some of the instances using where the minority roles do more than just entertain. The movie, Spencer Confidential, released by Netflix early last month and directed by Peter Berg provides an excellent platform for the analysis of one of the minority characters that defy the common stereotypical depictions of the minority groups in society.
The Movie, Spencer Confidential, stars Mark Walberg and Winston Duke as the main characters with the former taking the leading role. The action-comedy movie revolves around an ex-police officer from Boston who is getting out of jail for assaulting his fellow officer only to find himself at the center of a criminal organization involving both law enforcers and criminal gangs.
