Guidelines for Math Problem Solving
Discussion Forum 1, “Guidelines for Problem Solving,” focuses on strategies for problem solving. Post your response to the following discussion items.
Problem solving is an important application of mathematics that all of us use in our everyday lives. In section 1.3 of your textbook there were Guidelines For Problem Solving introduced. These four steps were first outlined by George Polya in his book How To Solve It.
For your first discussion please tell us a problem that you solved and how George Polya’s guidelines applied. Do not feel that you need to use one of the problems from the textbook. Math is everywhere and being applied everyday, even if we do not realize it is math. Please outline the specific problem, your solution and how the specific problem solving guidelines were applied. Be sure to carefully tell us how you applied each of the guidelines to your problem.
