Lizard Evolution Virtual Lab

Lab Report Instructions:

In this exercise, you examine changes in lizards in the Caribbean. Changes in the organism and changes in environmental factors both have effects on survival of different groups. No organism is completely insulated from its environment and here you explain how the two variables are connected.

Open HHMI interactive, the Lizard Evolution Lab at www(dot)hhmi(dot)org/biointeractive/lizard-evolution-virtual-lab  and enter the virtual lab. You find additional information on the lizards on the HHMI interactive web site.

 

In your lab notebook, write down the biological and environmental parameters you select and record the answers to the questions. As you proceed through the assignment, write down your observations. For example, what happened to lizards as they were isolated on different islands? Proceed through lab activities and then save your lab notes/progress as PDF file.

Once you have completed the experiments and answered the questions on the Student hand-out, organize the material and upload it to the assignment dropbox. The answers to the questions should be proceeded by the question that you are answering. Support your responses with lab data.

Compose your work using a word processor (or other software as appropriate) and save it frequently to your computer. Be sure to check your work and correct any spelling or grammatical errors before you upload it. When you are ready to submit your work, click "Browse My Computer" and find your file. You have seen how natural selection is the result of the interactions between genetic variations in a population and the environment. However, the environment may determine which variations are more favorable. More favorable traits are thereby passed on to the population through successive generations. After finishing the assigned reading in your textbook, you have an understanding of the role biological and environmental factors play in determining which variations of traits are more favorable and which could lead to extinction. You also saw how in smaller populations genetic drift could determine which traits persisted in the population.  You will now continue to prepare a laboratory report based on your observations in the Lizard Evolution Virtual Lab.

Introduction
Several scholars have studied the subject of evolution on different species. An example of a species that has been widely documented is the lizard genus Anolis from the Caribbean islands. As evidence, Dr. Jonathan Losos from Harvard University has close to 125 publications on the evolution of the organism under discussion. It owes to the reality that evidence from studies on evolution reveal that changes in both organisms and the environment affect the survival of different organisms. It is the reason an experiment was conducted to identify the effect of changes of the environment and organisms on the survival of the organism. Critical to the discussion is the fact that the experiment was conducted in a virtual lab. Further, it is vital that such an experiment is important to the society because it would help the society to understand the effect of the changing environment on the survival of the society. For instance, the society could shift its practices to meet the changing environment, because global warming could result in devastating effects to the society.
Lossos (2009)reveals that the Anole lizards is a diverse vertebrate genera with close to four hundred known species. It follows that the lizards provided the researcher with a variety of species for conducting the experiment. The same author further argues that the Caribbean islands is the home of almost 150 of the 400 known species of the lizards in question. It is also notable that the anole lizards have different features that enable them to fit into their environments. For example Tollis, and City University of New York. (2012). argues that some Anole lizard species with long legs use their legs for fast movement. Clearly, the author highlights the fact that organisms use their bodies to fit into their environment, which implies that changes in the structure of organisms or environment could affect their survival. Consequently, the researcher conducted the experiment with expectations about the results of the experiment. In short, the researcher hypothesized that both environmental changes and changes in organisms affect the survival of organisms. Additionally, the researcher was able to establish that the hypothesis was not false after completing the experiment.
Methods
As mentioned before, the experiment was conducted in a virtual lab. It follows that the computer was the only required material to conduct the experiment. However, it is crucial to note that the researcher used different computer software to conduct the experiment. It is because the researcher used Microsoft excel to record data and an internet browser to conduct the experiment. Critical to the discussion is the fact that Microsoft excel was also use for data analysis. Lizards were grouped based on their characteristics and their physical characteristics were recorded in module and a set of instructions from the virtual lab was used to conduct the experiment. An almost similar approach was used for module two, module, three, and module four.
Results
The results from module 1 of the experiment are recorded on table 1 below.
