William Shakespeare has several ideas that he developed in Macbeth that focus on the nature of motivations that influence a person's course of action. In Macbeth, it is clear that individuals are impacted by their past or other external factors (Johnson 3). For instance, Macbeth is regarded as a good person who is expected to have a promising future since he is a renowned warrior. However, three witches, known as the Weird Sisters, prophesy that he is destined to become King of Scotland in the future. This influences him to become evil, and in the end, he commits an unnatural and evil act, murdering his king.
Macbeth is motivated by the witches, and this forces him to be more ambitious about what he wants, rather than be satisfied with his current state. For instance, Lady Macbeth says, "Thou wouldst be great/ Art not without ambition, but without/ The illness should attend it" (Shakespeare 1.5). This reveals that Macbeth was influenced by many people around him to behave differently. Lady Macbeth's words show that individuals who are willing to forget their morality are those who are destined to greatness. The only way to achieve a person's dreams is through ruthless behavior. When he first hears about the idea of killing the king, he does not support it (Johnson 3). His heart beats abnormally as he ponders about what the future holds, and the impact of his choices.
