The DASH diet is a lifelong healthy eating strategy aimed at preventing or treating hypertension. DASH stands for Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension. There are two versions of the diet: the standard diet, where the total sodium consumed in a day is restricted to 2,300 mg, and the Low Sodium diet, where the total sodium consumed is limited to 1,500 mg (Mayo Clinic). The diet plan stresses foods low in sodium and rich in potassium, calcium, and magnesium.
