The success of satellite positioning in society is well documented with a tremendous number and variety of uses. In addition, it is believed that future GNSS constellations will enable accurate positioning to be done quicker than ever before with less expensive equipment by having receivers get positions from many satellites at once.

Summarize the basic concept of satellite positioning and what makes it advantageous for surveyors (or geomatics engineers!) to use over ground-based optical surveying (e.g. total station).
