Three stories combined
In this essay, a description of how complex the relationship could be is described. Three different stories are combined properly, and the way that the lives of individuals in the stories changed is described comprehensively. The three stories are (i) The Story of an Hour, by Kate Chopin. (ii) The Girls in their Summer Dresses by Irwin Shaw. (iii) Cat in the Rain by Ernest Hemmingway.
The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin is essentially about an ill wife who for a short time thinks her husband is dead and envisages a completely new life for herself with freedom. In this story, the life of Mrs. Mallard changed significantly. Mrs. Mallard is the protagonist of this narrative. She is the character around whom the other persons in the story revolve; she is in act the center of attention. She was “young and had a calm, fair face (Chopin 60).” From the start, the reader knows that Mrs. Mallard is “afflicted with a heart trouble” (Chopin 59). When informing her of the death of her husband, Josephine her sister was careful not to upset Mrs. Mallard considerably due to her heart trouble. When married to her husband, Mrs. Mallard was trapped as she lacked personal freedom. After getting the news of her George’s demise, she sobs with “sudden, wild abandonment” (Chopin 60) before disappearing to be alone. Mrs. Mallard retreats to a comfy chair at the front of an open windowpane. Strangely however, what she sees through the window is not gloomy, but somewhat joyful. She sees new leaves on trees swaying in the gentle wind, and “there was a delicious breath of rain in the air” (Chopin 60). The rain could be seen to symbolize the feeling of refreshment after tears have soaked the soul and cleansed the sorrows it may have had.
The author mentions somebody singing in the distance and birds “twittering in the eaves” (Chopin 60). This may suggest a gradual awakening within the spirit of Mrs. Mallard. As the birds of the air sing and the singing intensifies, the joy within Mrs. Mallard comes fully into being. She appears to gaze at the “patches of blue sky” (Chopin 60); as the sky breaks through the vast clouds, Mrs. Mallard realizes that she has achieved freedom. Mrs. Mallard fearfully attempts to fight back what she was feeling. She “was starting to recognize this thing which was approaching to possess her, and Mrs. Mallard was attempting to beat it back using her will” (Chopin 60). At last, she surrenders to her emotions and starts whispering that she is now “free, free, free” (Chopin 60). This means that her husband was very possessive of her and she was happy about his death; she had been in an unhappy marriage and she is now free from it.
The Girls in their Summer Dresses by Irwin Shaw basically narrates the beginning and end of the quarrel of a married couple as they stroll through Manhattan on a Sunday morning.
