The enormous debate about the interplay between faith and reason has persisted in the realm of theology. On one side are those who argue that these two are strange bedfellows while on the opposing side are those of the opinion that they are mutually exclusive. It against this background, that Martin C. Albl in his 2009 book “Reason, faith, and tradition: explorations in Catholic theology” revisits this debate by arguing that faith and reason are inseparable in that none can act independently. More importantly, is the significance role of reason in understanding the fundamentals of faith (Albl 22). Besides faith and reason, Albl also adds another criterion (tradition) that can be used to understand the wider concept of catholic theology. Albl (46) argues that catholic theology should be viewed against the backdrop of tradition which he defines as a specific way of thinking or certain of people and in this case the Roman Catholic traditions.
