Assessment and Application of Theories of Multiple Intelligences
Developmental theorists Howard Gardner and Robert Sternberg analyzed the exclusivity of Intelligence Quotient (IQ) as the most significant measure of intelligence. Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences evaluated the assumption that analytical ability of a person which normally focuses on traditional IQ testing is equal to greater intelligence. Gardner suggested that a person has at least eight different types of intelligence. The variation in strengths of each of these aspects exists between people. In a classroom setting, a student can learn the best material when taught in a modality that will complement their preferred component of intelligence.
As for Sternberg, he expanded on the traditional concept of intelligence. Sternberg highlights that there are three particular components of intelligence. These include componential, experiential and contextual (Spencer). The componential element is associated with the ability of a person to assess a situation, process the information and solve issues. The experiential component is often measured by the manner that a person approaches a particular problem and their specific approach to solving that issue.
