I happen to know a friend who tore an ACL while playing high school football. He said that the ACL injury starts with a popping sensation in the knee, followed by rapid swelling. Feelings of instability accompanied the swelling, and it became painful to bear his weight. Because of the severe pain and loss of range of motion, he was forced to stop playing and did not return to the game until six months later.
